A woman caused a commotion at the air-conditioned waiting hall of Unnao railway station in Uttar Pradesh, leading to her arrest after she was caught attempting to steal from fellow passengers.
The incident began when Sanjana, a woman from Kanpur, suddenly started moving in an unusual, almost dance-like manner in front of the seated passengers. Her erratic, swaying movements seemed designed to draw attention and create a distraction. During this act, her handbag slipped from her hand and fell to the floor. As she bent down to retrieve it, two expensive smartwatches slipped out of the bag and landed on the ground, instantly raising suspicion.
Passengers noticed that Sanjana herself was not wearing a watch, yet she carried two costly smartwatches that clashed with her modest attire—an inconsistency that deepened their doubts. Moments later, she was spotted attempting to slyly touch another passenger’s purse, prompting onlookers to raise an alarm.
Luckily, a joint patrol team from the Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF) was already on site, conducting a routine security check to ensure passenger safety and prevent crime. Acting quickly on the passengers’ complaint and a confidential tip-off, the officers rushed over and detained Sanjana.
A search of her belongings revealed a brown handbag, a mobile phone, and the two smartwatches. Sanjana was taken into custody and later sent to Unnao jail.
During questioning, police confirmed that Sanjana had been deliberately using distracting antics to divert attention and attempt theft. However, her plan was foiled thanks to the vigilance of the passengers and the swift response of the railway police.
Officials noted that such incidents, where women employ distraction tactics to steal in waiting areas or aboard trains, are not uncommon. This time, however, alert passengers and prompt police action ensured the accused was caught red-handed.
