Writer and activist Sarah Joseph inaugurated Chitrangana Film Society, a collective formed by women with a vision of fostering a new politics in viewing cinema, here on Sunday.

“All art forms are interpreted through the unique experiences of individuals. What we increasingly see today is women themselves reflecting on how they perceive art, particularly cinema. Women are now coming forward with their critiques, interpretations, and academic studies, even turning the camera towards themselves.”

The logo of the society — a camera turned inward — symbolises the urge to narrate herself, one’s lived experience, and to ask whether cinema represents it. That is the politics of vision this society hopes to cultivate, Ms. Joseph said while addressing the gathering.

As part of the inaugural event, Tara Ramanujan’s award-winning film Nishiddho was screened. The society also honoured designer Prasanna Aryan, who created the logo, and Leela Aravindan, noted for her early involvement in film society activities.

Chitrangana president Kusumam Joseph criticised the government’s decision to drastically raise theatre rental charges. “This move places an undue burden on film societies striving to bring quality cinema to wider audiences. The government must roll back this irresponsible decision, reduce theatre rents for film societies, and provide free facilities for screenings, especially for women-led groups,” she said. She added that lobbying for favourable policies would remain a key agenda of the collective.

The collective announced a series of initiatives, including monthly free film screenings, film study camps for women, support for women in filmmaking, and a dedicated women’s film festival.
