Afghanistan continues to be ranked as the unhappiest country in the world, according to the World Happiness Report 2026, which measures a country's happiness based on its gross domestic product, social support and personal freedom.

Afghanistan consistently holds the lowest spot (146th out of 146) in the annual UN-sponsored report.

Reports suggest that the denial of education and employment opportunities for women in Afghanistan, under Taliban rule, has led to a global increase in the mental stress of the country's population.

Afghanistan is followed by Sierra Leone and Malawi. Sierra Leone struggles with poverty, political instability, and the aftermath of civil war continue to affect the quality of life.

In Malawi, high poverty rates, food insecurity, and limited access to healthcare and education contribute to widespread unhappiness.

Next in the list is Zimbabwe, which faces hyperinflation, political instability, and widespread poverty, all of which severely impact the happiness of its citizens.

Following closely is Botswana, where high inequality and limited access to healthcare and education contribute to the challenges affecting the nation's overall well-being.
