Everton’s Ornella Vignola scored a hat-trick on her Women’s Super League debut, leading her team to a 4-1 victory over Liverpool, while champions Chelsea began their pursuit of a seventh consecutive title with a win as England’s top-flight returned this weekend.

Chelsea started the action with a 2-1 home win against Manchester City on Friday. On Saturday, Arsenal defeated the promoted London City Lionesses 4-1 before Vignola stole the spotlight with her outstanding performance for Everton on Sunday.

Liverpool’s Cornelia Kapocs gave the hosts a strong start at Anfield by scoring off the underside of the crossbar in the 12th minute. However, the Reds’ momentum faded as 20-year-old Vignola took control.

The winger, born in Uruguay but representing Spain at junior level, drove at Ceri Holland and curled in a brilliant equaliser in the 24th minute. Captain Katja Snoeijs then headed in a superb second goal, putting Everton ahead 2-1 at half-time.

Vignola added a header to the net nine minutes into the second half to make it 3-1, and secured her hat-trick with a deflected shot just two minutes later, completing the rout.

In Manchester, French forward Melvine Malard scored two late goals as United trounced Leicester City 4-0, while Bethany England’s late penalty earned Tottenham Hotspur a 1-0 win over West Ham United in their London derby.

On the south coast, Brighton & Hove Albion were held to a goalless draw at home by Aston Villa, the only one of the six matches on the opening weekend of the 12-team league without a goal.
