Mexican UFC star Yair Rodríguez, 33, has gone through surgery on his left hand after suffering a painful injury during his last fight. The injury happened on April 12, 2025, at UFC 314 in Miami, Florida, where Yair defeated Patricio “Pitbull” Freire by unanimous decision.
It was a big win that broke his two-fight losing streak and seemed to put him back in the title picture. But just months later, the surgery has now forced him to take a long break from the Octagon, with reports saying he won’t return until early 2026.
Yair Rodríguez hand surgery update after painful injury sidelines UFC star for months
Rodríguez added a strong win to his record when he beat Patricio Freire at UFC 314, held at the Kaseya Center in Miami, Florida. Ahead of that win, a rematch with featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski was discussed one that could have given Rodríguez a title shot. Yet the plan fell apart when the event moved from Mexico to San Antonio, Texas and was changed from a PPV to a Fight Night card, ending Rodríguez’s immediate title hopes.
After the win, Rodríguez delayed surgery hoping he could keep that title shot alive. But the injury became worse. On Oct 22, he underwent the procedure and will be unable to train for at least 2–4 months, effectively closing his 2025 competition chances.
Rodríguez posted on Instagram from the hospital: “I resisted the operation … all the doctors agreed it was necessary.” Also Read: “I’m Not Fussy As..”: Tom Aspinall Speaks Honestly About A Possible Fight With Alex Pereira And Calls Him Dangerous
