A young woman was allegedly gangraped and blackmailed at a popular tourist spot in Odisha’s Puri district, after which three suspects were detained on Monday, police sources said.
Sources said the incident occurred on Saturday when a couple visited the tourist spot near a beach.
“Some local youths clicked photographs of the couple and blackmailed them, triggering a quarrel between the youths and the couple. As per the statement of the victim, the local youths overpowered the couple and raped the woman,” said a police officer.
The victim is not a tourist, police said.
After the victim lodged a complaint, the police began investigating the matter and detained three youths for their alleged involvement. One more suspect is on the run and the police are looking taking him into custody as soon as possible, the officer said.
The police have recorded the statement of the victim and conducted a medical test. “A special team of police has been investigating the matter and trying to gather evidence. Strict action will be taken against all those involved in such a heinous crime,” said the officer.
