New Delhi: YouTube has announced they are bringing back private messaging by offering users a new way to share videos and discuss them directly within the platform. This feature has started to rolling out to the users who are aged 18 and older in the United States and select international markets.
This shift marks a return of the private conversation on YouTube after the company shut down its original direct messaging system in 2019. It aimed to focus on the public engagement features. After experimenting the redesigned messaging experience in late 2025, YouTube found strong interest from users who wanted an easier way to share content and chat without switching applications.
YouTube’s latest messaging system includes some safeguards focused on limiting unwanted interactions. Users must verify their age before accessing the feature, and conversations can only begin after sending an invitation link via a third-party messaging service.
The messaging tab can be accessed via the latest Messages icon located in the top-right corner of the YouTube application. Users can generate and send invitation links to friends and family. Once it is connected, they can share videos and discuss them directly within YouTube.
An invite-only approach indicates that YouTube is prioritizing communication between people who already know each other instead of creating a social network centered on conversations with strangers.
