Guwahati: Assam is reeling from the sudden loss of its beloved cultural icon, Zubeen Garg, who passed away at the age of 52 in Singapore on Friday. The legendary singer and composer, whose voice defined modern Assamese music, leaves behind a legacy that transcends generations.Garg’s timeless hits, including ‘Mugdho Hiya Mur’, ‘Maya, Ubhoti Suwa’, and the Bollywood sensation ‘Ya Ali’, have been the soundtrack of countless lives. His unexpected demise has sent shockwaves across the state, with fans, artists, and political leaders expressing their grief and acknowledging the irreplaceable void he leaves behind.Khanin Baruah of Guwahati, reflecting on Garg’s impact, described the news as devastating.

He recalled his first encounter with Garg’s music in 1992 and the profound connection he felt through the 2000 film ‘Hiya Diya Niya’. “He always carried a charm — it felt as though you had known him for years,” Baruah said, highlighting the warmth and familiarity Garg brought to every interaction.Arnab Das, another resident, emphasised Garg’s role in shaping modern Assamese music and his influence beyond the arts.

“From Bihu functions to grand concerts, his presence was everywhere,” Das noted, adding that Garg was a true influencer, known for his philanthropy and advocacy for the distressed.Rupankar Bhattacharjee, also grieving, shared how Garg’s fearless and grounded attitude inspired him. “His music shaped not just my taste but my outlook on life,” Bhattacharjee said, underscoring Garg’s impact on personal and cultural levels.Garg’s unique bond with Assam’s youth, symbolising rebellion, hope, and authenticity, will be deeply missed. His legacy, however, will continue to inspire and resonate with generations to come.
