A total of 1,097 motorists were booked for driving under the influence of alcohol during weekend special enforcement drives conducted by Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Malkajgiri traffic police on Friday and Saturday (May 15 and May 16), officials said on Sunday.
While Hyderabad Traffic Police booked 474 cases, Cyberabad Traffic Police booked 300 motorists and Malkajgiri Traffic Police booked 323 motorists during its weekend special checks.
The Malkajgiri Police report also showed broader traffic enforcement action during the week, with 10,777 challans imposed for obstruction of carriageway, 7,047 for wrong-side driving, 2,533 for signal jumping, 2,026 for triple riding, 1,447 for overspeeding and 1,289 for mobile phone use while driving.
Police said all offenders booked during the special drives would be produced before the court. They warned that motorists found driving in an intoxicated condition and causing fatal accidents would face charges under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, which carries a maximum punishment of 10 years’ imprisonment along with a fine.
