A 10-month-old child becomes Kerala’s youngest organ donor as her parents, Arun Abraham and Sherin Ann John, donate her liver, kidneys, heart valve, and eyes at Amrita Hospital in Ernakulam.

The liver will be given to a 6-month-old baby undergoing treatment at KIMS Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram. He is the youngest child to receive a liver through posthumous organ donation in the state.

Health Minister Veena George expressed gratitude to the parents for the decision taken to save the lives of others despite their extreme grief. The minister also said that she shares the grief of the family.

The 10-month-old child Alin Sherin Abraham, daughter of Mallappally natives of Pathanamthitta became brain dead following a road accident at 2.30 pm on February 5. While travelling from Kottayam to Thiruvalla via M.C. Road, a car coming from the opposite direction rammed into her near a junction. The child was seriously injured and the child’s mother and mother’s parents who were with her suffered serious injuries.

Immediately after the accident, the child was admitted to hospitals in Changanassery and Thiruvalla and later on February 7 to Amrita Hospital in Kochi. On February 13, the child became brain dead and the child’s family members gave their consent for organ donation.

The child’s two kidneys will be given to the child who is undergoing treatment at the Pediatric Nephrology Ward of Thiruvananthapuram Medical College SAT Hospital. The liver was donated to KIMS Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram, the heart valve to Sree Chitra Institute in Thiruvananthapuram and two eyeballs to Amrita Hospital.

Two kidneys, a liver and a heart valve are being brought from Amrita Hospital, Ernakulam in the evening to Thiruvananthapuram Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram KIMS Hospital and Sree Chitra.

The organ donation was coordinated under the leadership of K-SOTTO ( Kerala State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization) with cooperation from the Home Department.
