A 10-month-old girl from Kerala has become the youngest organ donor in the state after her parents chose to donate her organs following brain death, giving a new chance at life to five patients.

The child, identified as Aalin Sherin Abraham, was critically injured in a road accident on February 5 near Pallam in Kottayam while travelling with her mother and grandparents. Despite treatment at hospitals in Changanassery and Thiruvalla, she was later shifted to Amrita Hospital in Kochi for advanced care.

However, she was declared brain-dead on February 13 after several days of intensive treatment.

Parents Take Decision Amid Grief

Her parents, Arun Abraham and Sherin Ann John from Mallappally in Pathanamthitta district, agreed to donate her organs soon after doctors explained her condition.

Hospital authorities coordinated the process with the Kerala State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (K-SOTTO). Doctors described the decision as rare and deeply moving, saying the family chose to help others even in the middle of personal tragedy.

Organs Given Life To Five People

Following surgery, the infant’s organs were distributed to different hospitals in Thiruvananthapuram:

Liver – Transplanted into a six-month-old baby

Kidneys – Given to another child

Heart valve – Sent to Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology

Corneas – Donated to the eye bank

Police arranged a smooth road corridor to transport the organs quickly.

State Honours The Child

Kerala Police accorded a Guard of Honour to the infant, recognising her contribution. Kerala Health Minister Veena George said the family’s decision was an act of compassion and a message to society about organ donation.

Union Minister Suresh Gopi and state officials paid their respects during the funeral at St. Thomas CSI Church in Nedungadappally, where many locals gathered to honour the child.
