An FIR has been registered against 10 students following a protest on the Osmania University campus demanding allowing of outsiders inside the hostel and the removal of the Director of Campus Hostels for Women.
The case was booked by the Osmania University (OU) police under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita based on a complaint lodged by the university’s Chief Security Officer, Raza Khan, said a senior officer from the OU police.
According to the complaint, the female students residing in the Centenary Hostel staged a protest seeking the removal of Prof. Kalyani Laxmi, Director of Campus Hostels for Women. “The protest was reportedly triggered by her decision not to permit outsiders to stay in the campus hostel, which the complainant stated was against university rules,” said the officer.
Sources said that one of the woman student wanted her ailing mother to stay with her in the hostel, which was flagged as a health risk concern by the management.
The Chief Security Officer alleged that the students blocked the road opposite the Arts College and obstructed vehicular movement from the night of February 11 8 p.m. until 9 a.m. on February 12. He stated that despite requests from the police to clear the road, the students continued their protest and raised slogans against the police.
He further alleged that the protest was in violation of a university circular prohibiting demonstrations on campus. Police said an investigation is underway.
