A train derailment near Wanawasala in Sri Lanka injured at least 12 passengers on Friday, with police arresting a suspect accused of sabotaging the railway track.

According to local reports cited by Sri Lanka Tweet and Newsfirst, the suspect allegedly removed lock bars and metal plates from the track, leading to the derailment.

The train was travelling from Polgahawela to Colombo when it derailed between Wanawasala and Hunupitiya, disrupting operations on Sri Lanka’s main railway line.

Officials said one carriage overturned during the incident, leaving 12 passengers injured. Emergency teams reached the spot soon after the accident and the injured were shifted for treatment.

Railway authorities have launched an investigation into the derailment, while police are probing allegations of deliberate sabotage behind the incident.

Train services on the affected route remained disrupted for several hours as officials worked to clear the tracks and restore normal operations.
