Actor-turned-politician Vijay has pulled off something few Indian politicians, let alone first-time electoral challengers, have managed—turn a state election into the internet’s biggest obsession.

Fresh Wikipedia traffic data for May 4-10 this year, the week of the Tamil Nadu election results, shows Vijay sitting atop the platform’s most-viewed pages chart, ahead of global celebrities, international events and even other high-stakes Indian elections. His Wikipedia page alone clocked a staggering 2.98 million views, making it the most viewed page of the week.

The frenzy did not stop there. The “2026 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election" page was the second most viewed overall with 2.47 million hits, while several pages directly tied to Vijay’s political rise and the TVK wave also surged into the top rankings.

Among them were “Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu" at 1.4 million views, “Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)" at 1.31 million, “Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly" at 8,24,000, MK Stalin at 5,48,000, and Trisha Krishnan at 5,91,000.

In total, the broader Tamil Nadu/Vijay-TVK ecosystem amassed a massive 13.46 million views in one week, more than double the West Bengal election ecosystem’s 6.47 million and nearly eight times Kerala’s 1.7 million.

The scale becomes even clearer when compared with global names and viral events that week. Vijay-related interest outperformed pages linked to David Attenborough, Ted Turner and even Michael Jackson, all of whom featured among the week’s most searched topics.

Five of the top 10 most-viewed Wikipedia pages were directly connected to Vijay or the Tamil Nadu political churn, highlighting how the election evolved beyond a conventional political contest into a full-scale pop culture and political phenomenon.

For a debut electoral battle, the numbers point to something unprecedented: Vijay did not just win political attention; he dominated the national internet conversation.

THE VIJAY FACTOR

For nearly six decades, Tamil Nadu politics revolved around one axis: the DMK versus the AIADMK. Governments changed, leaders rose and fell, but the Dravidian duopoly survived every wave, from MGR to Jayalalithaa to Karunanidhi to MK Stalin.

Then came Vijay.

In his very first election, the actor-turned-politician did what generations of challengers failed to do: shatter the DMK-AIADMK hold over Tamil Nadu and emerge as chief minister.

The 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly election has now gone down as one of the biggest political upsets in the state’s history. Vijay’s TVK, contesting its maiden election, won 108 seats on its own and emerged as the single-largest party in the 234-member assembly.

The verdict effectively broke a 59-year streak of Dravidian-party dominance that began in 1967.

What made the victory even more dramatic was the political uncertainty that followed. Despite becoming the largest party, Vijay initially fell short of the majority mark of 118, triggering days of intense negotiations, four meetings with Governor Rajendra Arlekar and lobbying for support from smaller parties. Eventually, Congress, VCK, CPI, CPI(M) and IUML extended support, taking the Vijay camp to 120 MLAs—two above the majority mark.
