A lethal combination of typhoon-spurred flooding, violent tornadoes, and catastrophic landslides has claimed the lives of at least 15 people across China as of Tuesday. The sudden, severe convective weather has injured hundreds more and forced the emergency evacuation of tens of thousands of residents.

With massive infrastructure damage unfolding, Chinese President Xi Jinping has issued an urgent directive for “all-out" emergency rescue operations to treat the injured, resettle displaced citizens, and mitigate further risks.

Southern China: Typhoon Maysak Triggers Dam Collapse

In the southern region of Guangxi, the relentless downpours of Typhoon Maysak have claimed at least four lives, leaving eight people missing.

Dramatic footage broadcasted by state media CCTV captured the moment the immense hydraulic pressure of the floodwaters completely broke through the concrete walls of a local reservoir dam. The breached structure sent a violent torrent of muddy water surging downstream.

In response to the catastrophic flooding, emergency teams have been deployed in inflatable boats, navigating submerged streets to pull stranded residents from engulfed homes. In the regional capital of Nanning, authorities have officially raised their flood control emergency response to its highest, most critical level as over 50,000 residents were rapidly evacuated to emergency shelters.

Central China: ‘Sucked Out’ By Rare Tornadoes

Concurrently, the central province of Hubei was battered late Monday by an intense outbreak of severe thunderstorms and gale-force winds that killed 11 people and left 331 injured. State news agency Xinhua confirmed that multiple rare, high-velocity tornadoes ripped through the region.

The destructive force of the winds was so sudden that it completely hollowed out residential structures. In Hubei alone, 22 houses collapsed entirely, and another 4,800 sustained heavy structural damage.

Terrified locals recounted harrowing tales of family members being violently “sucked out" of their properties as walls gave way.

“Wall cabinets, sofas, coffee tables, dining tables, and chairs vanished in an instant," a resident named Wang told the Xiaoxiang Morning Herald. “It was as if the entire building had been hollowed out."

Deadly Landslide & Reconstruction Funding

The disaster extended to China’s northwestern Gansu province on Tuesday, where a massive rain-triggered landslide claimed five lives, with 12 people still missing under the mud and debris.

Following the tragedy, the Chinese government immediately allocated 30 million Yuan (~$4.4 million) in emergency relief and reconstruction funds to rebuild the devastated sector.
