At least 15 people were killed and 88 injured in a train collision near Indonesian capital, a senior minister said on Tuesday.

The collision between a commuter train and long-distance train took place in Bekasi, outside Jakarta, on late Monday. The carriage reserved for women suffered most damage.

Reuters quoted Mohammad Syafii, the head of Indonesia’s search and rescue agency, saying that the victims were women and most were pinned inside the crushed metal. “We needed to involve personnel with certain skills to perform a measured extrication," he said.

Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, Indonesia’s senior minister for infrastructure, on Tuesday said the death toll had risen to 15.

Meanwhile, state news agency Antara quoted Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi saying the collision took place as a taxi stopped on a crossing near the Bekasi Timur station. The commuter train was held on the platform where it was then hit by the long-distance train, Reuters cited the report.

On Tuesday, President Prabowo Subianto announced that an investigation has been launched into the matter. Indonesia’s National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) is investigating the crash. He also said that a flyover will soon be built neart the railway tracks.
