15yo, two others succumb to burns in Nayagarh firecracker blast, toll now 4

Berhampur: Three persons, including a 15-year-old boy of Ganjam district, succumbed to their burn injuries on Wednesday, taking the toll in the April 3 firecracker blast in Nayagarh district’s Korada village, to four.The deceased have been identified as Hadibandhu Sethi (58), the owner of the illegally run firecracker unit, Bapuni Nahak (38), residents of Minagadia village, and Amit Sethi (15), a native of Gereda village near Bhanjanagar in Ganjam district. Amit was staying at his brother-in-law’s house in Nayagarh for studies, sources said.On April 4, the day after the firecracker blast, Babu Nahak (35) of Minaguda village had died at AIIMS, Bhubaneswar, police said.Six people, including the 15-year-old boy suffered injuries in the explosion of the firecrackers, which they were making illegally in a house at Korada village under Nuagaon police station limits, for festivals like Lanka Podi and Hanuman Jayanti on April 7 and 14, respectively.Police and fire personnel, along with local residents, rushed them to a nearby hospital from where they were referred to AIIMS and SCB Medical College, Cuttack.

Even the house was damaged in the explosion. Two others injured are battling for their lives at AIIMS, sources said.Rashmi Ranjan Sahoo, inspector-in charge, Nuagaon police station, said they have arrested four people, including the house owner and supplier of the explosives illegally to Hadibandhu for preparation of the firecrackers. Huge quantities of firecrackers and raw materials were seized from the house, he said.The arrested include Ramesh Sethi (55) and his wife, Kuni Dei (50), brother of Hadibandhu for allowing their house for illegal manufacturing of firecrackers. Nirmal Prasad Rao and Bamadeb Dora of Khurda were arrested for illegally supplying explosives to the team, he said. Preliminary inquiry has revealed that the victims were making the fire-crackers without any valid licence, while the accused from Khurda supplied the explosives, he added.
