NEW DELHI: Four men allegedly stabbed an 18-year-old to death at Ramlila Maidan in northwest Delhi’s Jahangir Puri, after tensions over his brother’s relationship with a woman from their family escalated.Police said a PCR call was received around 7.05pm on April 5 from Babu Jagjivan Ram Memorial Hospital regarding a youth who had been brought dead with multiple stab injuries. The victim was identified as Hasmat, a resident of the area.During inquiry, Hasmat’s brother Hakeem, who witnessed the incident, told police that the attack took place around 6pm at Ramlila Maidan. He alleged that four men — Dilshad, Irfan and Imran, along with their relative Rizbul — surrounded Hasmat and repeatedly stabbed him with sharp-edged weapons.Police said the accused and the victim’s family knew each other and had a history of strained relations. “The dispute stemmed from Hakeem’s long-standing relationship with a woman from the accused family, which had caused friction for several years. Matters worsened recently after an argument during Eid involving members of both families, further deepening the hostility,” a senior police officer said. Investigators said Hasmat had earlier confronted the accused over the dispute, after which tensions escalated.
Police said the dispute between the two families had been building for years, largely due to Hasmat’s brother Hakeem’s relationship with a woman from the accused family, which continued for 5–6 years. Even after Hakeem married another woman, in 2024, he remained in contact with that woman, deepening tensions between the families. The situation escalated further around Eid when Hasmat’s wife, was allegedly abused by the woman, who is now married to Rizbul.
Following this, Hasmat had confronted the accused at their house, leading to a heated argument, after which the accused allegedly held a grudge against him and his family. On Sunday evening, the accused allegedly attacked him, leading to his death.A case of murder has been registered at Jahangir Puri police station based on Hakeem’s statement. All four accused are currently absconding, and multiple teams have been formed to trace and arrest them.
