Significant strides have been made in strengthening the healthcare sector in Mysuru and five surrounding districts, owing to the initiatives of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, said K.S. Sadananda, Medical Superintendent of Sri Jayadeva Institute for Cardiovascular Sciences and Research.
Addressing reporters, Dr. Sadananda said several key healthcare facilities, including a district hospital, trauma care centre, super-speciality hospital, a nephrology unit and others have been established in Mysuru, significantly benefiting the public. These developments have also been extended to neighbouring districts, improving access to advanced medical services.
He recalled that during Siddaramaiah’s previous tenure as Chief Minister, a 400-bed Sri Jayadeva hospital was set up in Mysuru under the directorship of noted cardiologist C.N. Manjunath. However, with the steady rise in heart-related ailments, the need for expansion has become urgent. Responding to this demand, the Chief Minister has announced an allocation of ₹180 crore in the State Budget this year to add 200 more beds to the hospital, which is now headed by B. Dinesh.
At present, the hospital handles around 800 to 900 outpatients daily, along with nearly 100 emergency cases. On average, 60 to 70 angiograms and angioplasty procedures are conducted every day, in addition to four to five open-heart surgeries. Despite these efforts, the ICU continues to face a shortage of beds, with some patients being treated on stretchers.
To address the issue, the proposed expansion will include enhanced infrastructure such as cath labs, ICU units, and specialised facilities for paediatric cardiac care and vascular surgeries. Additional floors have to be constructed on the existing canteen building on the campus to accommodate the new facilities, he explained.
Dr. Sadananda expressed gratitude to the Chief Minister for the allocation, stating that the expansion will ease the pressure on the healthcare system and improve patient care in the region.
