Japanese wheelchair tennis sensation Tokito Oda etched his name in the sport’s history books on Saturday, completing the career Golden Slam at just 19 years old after a dramatic victory in the US Open men’s wheelchair singles final.

Oda edged his Argentine doubles partner Gustavo Fernandez 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (13/11) in a nail-biting contest that ended with the teenager collapsing to the court in tears.

The title was the only missing piece in his collection, and it came just a day after Oda and Fernandez had combined to win the men’s wheelchair doubles crown at Flushing Meadows.

“After match I got too emotional, but now I can speak," Oda admitted afterward. “I’m feeling just amazing. This result is what I imagined every day after Wimbledon. I was imagining this trophy, how to win here, and how to celebrate on the court. But this match was maybe the craziest of my career."

The world number one now owns seven Grand Slam singles titles, adding the US Open to his French Open and Wimbledon triumphs earlier this year. His historic run also includes gold at the 2024 Paris Paralympics, making him one of the youngest athletes ever to achieve the Golden Slam — all four majors plus Olympic or Paralympic gold.

His only blemish this season was a runner-up finish to Britain’s Alfie Hewett at the Australian Open.

Double Success for Japan

Japan’s dominance in wheelchair tennis extended further on Saturday as Yui Kamiji lifted the women’s singles trophy. Kamiji mounted a stunning comeback to defeat China’s Li Xiaohui 0-6, 6-1, 6-3, claiming her 11th Grand Slam singles title.

Kamiji has now won the Australian Open, French Open, and US Open this year, falling just short at Wimbledon.
