Norway stormed their way to an 11-1 triumph over Moldova on Wednesday in the FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifier between the sides at the Ullevaal Stadium in a landslide victory.
Erling Haaland struck five times, while Thelo Aasgaard netted four. Felix Horn Myhre and Martin Odegaard added one each to complete the rout.
The Manchester City striker scored a hat trick by halftime and continued to dominate, netting Norway’s second, third, fourth, sixth, and tenth goals in one of the biggest wins in European World Cup qualification history.
Haaland achieved this feat despite needing three stitches after an unusual accident where he was “banged out" by a bus door, as he described on social media, reportedly while exiting the vehicle at the team hotel.
Two of Haaland’s goals came from passes by Arsenal’s Martin Ødegaard, who also scored one himself. Felix Myhre scored one goal and assisted Haaland’s first, while substitute Thelo Aasgaard found himself in the rare position of scoring four goals but not being his team’s top scorer.
Moldova’s sole goal was accidentally scored by Norwegian defender Leo Østigård, who sent an attempted pass into his own net.
This was the biggest win of the current World Cup qualifying cycle in Europe, surpassing the Netherlands’ 8-0 victory over Malta in June. It nearly matched the all-time European qualification record, a 12-0 win by West Germany against Cyprus in 1969, and equaled Norway’s largest competitive game victory margin.
Ranked 154th globally and sixth from last in Europe, Moldova has lost all five of its qualifying games, conceding 25 goals and scoring just three. Despite this, a peculiarity in the qualifying system means Moldova still has a chance of reaching the World Cup. They won a group in the lowest tier Nations League against Malta and Andorra, which could earn them a spot in the playoff round.
