At least two people died and five others went missing after a boat carrying villagers capsized in Bihar’s Samastipur district on Thursday morning, officials said, prompting an intensive rescue operation by local authorities.
The incident occurred around 5.45 am when the passengers were returning from Sultanpur Diara in the Mohiuddinnagar block of the district. According to a statement issued by the Patna district administration, the boat, which was carrying 14 people, overturned due to strong winds.

Rescue teams from both Samastipur and Patna district administrations have been deployed and are jointly conducting search and rescue operations in the area.
So far, seven people have been rescued alive, while the bodies of two persons have been recovered, the statement said. Efforts are continuing to trace the five people who remain missing.
The identities of the deceased have not yet been confirmed, officials added.
