Two persons lost their lives and one other suffered serious injuries after the BMW they were travelling in crashed into a road divider and flipped several times in Maharashtra.
The incident took place in Thane district during the early hours of Sunday. According to the police, the luxury vehicle was allegedly being driven at a high speed when the accident occurred.
The impact of the crash left the vehicle in a mangled state. The people who died in the accident have been identified as 26-year-old Yogesh Dighe and 24-year-old Rikeba Jacob.
Their bodies have been sent to a government hospital for post-mortem, an official, cited by news agency PTI, said. Anand, the third occupant, who survived with injuries, is undergoing treatment at a private hospital, the official added.
The accident occurred around 4 am on a stretch of the Mumbai-Vadodara highway near Badlapur. Preliminary findings suggest that the supposedly speeding BMW hit a road divider, causing the driver to lose control.
The vehicle then overturned multiple times before coming to a halt, police said. Locals and motorists rushed to the spot after hearing a loud noise and alerted the authorities.
"A case of accidental death has been registered, and further investigation is underway," the in-charge of Badlapur police station said. A forensic team collected evidence from the site of the accident.
Police are examining the case from all possible angles, including whether the driver was under the influence of alcohol, the official said.
