Student dies after basketball structure collapses at Tolani Maritime Institute in Pune; police probe safety lapses as similar past incidents spur calls for stricter audits

A 20-year-old student died after a basketball structure collapsed on him at the Tolani Maritime Institute in Pune on Sunday, raising serious concerns over safety standards on campus.

The man, identified as Vishal Verma, was undergoing training at the institute and was playing basketball when the incident occurred. According to initial reports, the rim and attached iron structure of the basketball stand gave way while he was hanging from it, causing the heavy setup to fall directly onto his head.

The tragic incident took place around 7.20 am on the institute’s playground. Soon after, fellow students and staff immediately rushed to help Verma, who had sustained severe head injuries and was bleeding profusely. He was taken to a nearby hospital in Talegaon, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

After being informed about the incident, officials from the Ambi MIDC police station reached the spot and conducted a preliminary inspection. Authorities have begun an investigation to determine whether the collapse was caused by structural weakness, rusting, or faulty installation of the equipment.

The incident has sparked outrage among students and parents, who have questioned the maintenance of sports infrastructure at the reputed institution.

Similar Incidents In Haryana

The tragedy echoes similar fatal accidents reported last year in Haryana. In once case, 16-year-old player, Hardik Rathi, died after a poorly secured basketball pole fell on him during practice in Rohtak. Despite efforts by friends, he could not be saved. Daya earlier, in Bahadurgarh, 15-year-old Aman suffered fatal injuries after a similar pole collapse at a stadium. He later died at Pandit Bhagwat Dayal Sharma Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences on November 24.

These repeated incidents have intensified calls for stricter safety audits and regular maintenance of sports facilities across educational institutions to prevent such avoidable deaths.
