In a shocking incident from Navi Mumbai, police have arrested a ward boy who allegedly posed as a doctor and administered injections to a 21-year-old woman, resulting in her death, an official from the Vashi police station said on Monday.
The incident occurred on February 5 in Sector 11 of Vashi. The victim was identified as Prachiti Bhikuram Bhuvad.
A police official told news agency PTI that the accused, Sandesh Yashwant Pashte, was contacted by the woman’s family after she complained of irregular menstrual cycles.
According to the police, Pashte introduced himself as a doctor and examined the young woman at her residence.
As the woman narrated her health issues, the ward boy allegedly informed her that she was suffering from Polycystic Ovary Disorder (PCOD).
The ward boy then proposed a treatment plan involving a course of five injections, for which he charged the family Rs 15,000, assuring them that he would personally administer the medication.
On February 5, Pashte visited the woman’s home and gave her two injections, the police said.
Shortly after receiving the shots, her condition reportedly worsened rapidly, and she fell unconscious.
The Vashi police station official said that the accused appeared panicked following the woman’s collapse, and allegedly asked the woman’s father to dispose of a bag containing used syringes and other medical waste in the trash.
Family members then rushed the woman to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared her dead nearly two hours later.
The police further said that when confronted by the woman’s relatives, Pashte admitted that he was not a doctor.
According to the official, he confessed to being a ward boy employed at a private nursing home in Andheri in Mumbai and acknowledged that he did not possess any recognised medical qualification or medical certificate.
Following a complaint filed by the family, the police registered a case against Pashte and arrested him on February 6.
The accused was booked under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita on charges including culpable homicide not amounting to murder, cheating by personation and other offences.
Police said an investigation was underway to determine the exact nature of the injections administered to the woman and to establish further circumstances surrounding her death.
Officers were also examining whether the accused had treated other people in a similar manner.
