Belgium were held to yet another draw by Iran at the Los Angeles Stadium on Monday in the Group G encounter between the sides in the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Belgium, who played out a draw in their opener against Egypt, could only manage to pick up another point against Iran after going down to ten men as Nathan Ngoy was given the marching orders in the second half.
The Red Devils had 23 shots against Iran without scoring, their most at the quadrennial since Belgium’s 1994 WC game against Saudi Arabia, in which they had 28 shots without netting one.
The stalemate took Iran to the top of Group G, with Belgium behind in second with 2 points in as many fixtures for both sides. New Zealand and Egypt, who have a point from a game each come in third and fourth in the pool.
Belgium remain winless in the ongoing edition of the quadrennial spectacle as they have 2 points in as many games in Group H.
Earlier on Sunday, Spain delivered an emphatic performance in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group H clash at Atalanta Stadium in the United States, cruising to a 4-0 victory over Saudi Arabia. Mikel Oyarzabal and Lamine Yamal were instrumental in securing the convincing win for La Roja.
Spain asserted their dominance from the outset and broke the deadlock in the 11th minute through Yamal. The young winger scored his first goal of the tournament, giving the former world champions an early lead.
Oyarzabal then responded strongly to recent criticism by extending Spain’s advantage. The striker had faced questions after an underwhelming display in the team’s scoreless draw against Cabo Verde, where he failed to record a touch during the opening 30 minutes of the match.
He soon found the net again to complete a brace and put Spain 3-0 ahead, leaving them comfortably in control by halftime.
Saudi Arabia’s difficult evening worsened in the latter stages when Hassan Altambakti accidentally turned the ball into his own net. The own goal completed Spain’s four-goal rout and sealed a commanding victory.
