25yo man drowns while bathing at Ramganga Barrage in Bijnor
Bijnor: A 25-year-old man drowned while bathing at Ramganga Barrage in Bijnor’s Harewali area on Sunday evening. Rajpal Singh had gone to the barrage with fellow villagers when he was swept away by the swift current near Gate No.
1.After being alerted, police launched a search operation with the help of local divers and recovered the body around 10.30pm.Police conducted an inquest and, at the family’s request, handed over the body for the last rites, which were performed on Monday.Rajpal’s father, Nihal Singh, said his son had left for the barrage around 7pm. The family, which depends on daily wage labour for its livelihood, has been left shattered by the incident.
Rajpal got married only a year ago.Police have urged people to stay away from deep water and wetland areas, warning against bathing at the barrage.Meanwhile, villagers demanded stricter enforcement of safety measures, alleging that despite restrictions, people continue to jump into the water from the railings of the barrage. They said repeated complaints about unsafe bathing practices and inadequate preventive measures have not been acted upon and called for stronger safeguards to prevent such accidents.
