Meerut: Four people died and two others injured after a speeding car crashed into a truck from behind on National Highway-9 under Gajraula police station limits in Amroha district around 3 am on Wednesday.

Police suspect the car driver dozed off at the wheel.Five friends, including Masood (22), Naseemul (21) and Hashim (22), all residents of West Bengal’s Malda district, were pursuing Hifz studies (structured memorisation of the Quran) in Varanasi and had come to Bareilly on a trip three days ago.Dhanaura circle officer Anjali Kataria said, “Preliminary investigation suggests the group had boarded a train from Bareilly to Delhi on Tuesday night.

Due to overcrowding, they got down at Rampur railway station and hired a taxi to Delhi, from where they were scheduled to board another train to Varanasi.”Police said the car allegedly rammed into an unidentified truck. Masood, Naseemul and Hashim died on the spot, while driver Mohd Salman (25) succumbed to injuries later. The two injured occupants are undergoing treatment.“The bodies have been sent for postmortem examination, and further legal proceedings are underway. Families of the deceased have been informed, and efforts are being made to identify the other vehicle through CCTV footage. An FIR will be registered once a complaint is received,” the CO added.
