Losing Sachin Ahir compromises the ground-level support, resource management, and organisational network needed to protect Aaditya Thackeray's home turf Worli

The sudden exit of MLC Sachin Ahir to join the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena is a severe political and strategic blow to Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT). It comes on the heels of another massive crisis where six of the party’s nine Lok Sabha MPs also defected to the Shinde camp under “Operation Tiger".
Ahir’s defection is particularly damaging because he was a critical pillar of the party’s urban stronghold and a key strategist for the party’s top leadership.
WHY SACHIN AHIR’S EXIT IS A MASSIVE BLOW TO UBT
1. Vulnerability in Worli (Aaditya Thackeray’s Base)
Ahir was a former MLA from the Worli constituency. In 2019, Aaditya Thackeray brought Ahir over from the NCP specifically to clear a safe path and build a strong local network for Aaditya’s entry into electoral politics. Losing Ahir directly compromises the ground-level support, resource management, and organisational network needed to protect Aaditya Thackeray’s home turf in future elections.

2. Loss of Key Mumbai Influence & Labour Network
Ahir is a well-known, veteran leader with deep roots in Mumbai’s traditional labour and trade unions (such as the Rashtriya Mill Mazdoor Sangh). For a party like the Shiv Sena, whose core identity relies on local workers and grassroot networks (karyakartas), losing a prominent Mumbai face heavily dilutes its local influence.
3. Complete Institutional Erosion
Ahir immediately filed a nomination as the ruling Mahayuti candidate for the Deputy Chairperson position of the Maharashtra Legislative Council. By helping the Shinde-led alliance capture these top constitutional posts, the UBT faction loses its final major institutional leverage inside the state’s legislative machinery.
WHERE DOES THIS LEAVE SHIV SENA (UBT)?
The continuous attrition has left the party in an incredibly precarious position, forcing a rapid shift in its survival strategy:
Shrinking Parliamentary & Legislative Strength: With the exit of six Lok Sabha MPs, UBT’s presence in the lower house has shrunk to just three members. Ahir’s departure now triggers further numerical and psychological erosion within the Legislative Council (Upper House).
Perception of a Sinking Ship: Coming right after the mass MP defection, Ahir’s move reinforces the narrative that Uddhav Thackeray cannot hold his top leadership together. It signals to ground-level workers that the shift of power toward the Shinde faction may be permanent.
Heavier Reliance on MVA Allies: With its own organisational structure fragmenting, UBT is left with no choice but to rely entirely on its alliance partners, the Congress and NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar), to stay competitive. This weakens their bargaining power during seat-sharing discussions.
Forced Push for Grassroot Rebuilding: Stripped of many high-profile leaders, the party is now forced to pivot completely back to an extra-parliamentary movement, counting purely on public sympathy and brand-new, younger local faces to rebuild their structure from the ground up.
