The US military is facing significant attrition in its MQ-9 Reaper fleet during Operation Epic Fury in Iran. While these drones have been instrumental in striking hundreds of targets, including military infrastructure and nuclear sites, the cost has been high both financially and strategically.

How many Reaper drones were lost? LUCAS vs Reaper, News18 explains.

How many Reaper drones have been lost?

Reports indicate that 11 to 13 MQ-9 Reaper drones have been lost during the current conflict since it escalated on February 28.

Each unit is valued at approximately $30 million to $32 million, bringing the total estimated loss for the Reaper fleet alone to over $330 million, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Originally designed for counter-terrorism in low-threat environments, the slow-moving Reapers (top speed 480 km/h) have proven highly vulnerable to Iran’s advanced and layered air-defence systems.

When Reapers were struck

March 14: An MQ-9 was reportedly shot down by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) over Bandar Abbas in Hormozgan Province.

March 15: An Italian Air Force MQ-9 Reaper was destroyed during an Iranian strike on the Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait.

At least one Reaper was mistakenly downed by Qatari forces during the early days of the conflict.

Reapers out, LUCAS in

In response to these costs, the US has begun deploying LUCAS (Low-cost Uncrewed Combat Attack System) drones.

The primary reasons for the switch include, according to reports:

1. Losing a $30 million Reaper to a missile that costs significantly less is a “math problem" the U.S. cannot win. In contrast, the LUCAS costs only $35,000, making it cheaper than the interceptors used to shoot it down.

2. Reapers are large, slow, and lack stealth, making them easy targets for Iran’s advanced S-300 and Khordad-15 systems. The LUCAS is small and deployed in swarms, designed to overwhelm defenses through sheer numbers rather than evasion.

3. Reapers were designed for “permissive environments" (hunting insurgents with no air defences). In a high-intensity conflict with Iran, the US needs expendable assets that can strike deep into contested airspace without a massive strategic or financial loss if destroyed.

4. Reapers take months to build and require intensive maintenance. LUCAS drones are modular and “attritable", meaning they can be mass-produced quickly to replace combat losses in real-time.
