A tourist bus carrying 42 Umrah pilgrims to the Kannur International Airport in Kerala was gutted in a fire at Shivapuram near Mattannur in the early hours of Tuesday (June 23, 2026), though all passengers escaped unhurt.

The bus, which had started from Wayanad on Monday night, caught fire when it reached Shivapuram. The driver noticed flames spreading from the rear side of the vehicle and immediately stopped the bus and woke up the sleeping passengers, who were evacuated safely. Their luggage was also removed from the vehicle before the fire spread further. Local residents and Fire and Rescue Services personnel from Mattanur and Koothuparamba joined efforts to douse the flames.
