The State government and the district administration are fully prepared to face any eventuality during the monsoon season, Revenue Minister K. Rajan has said. He visited a flood relief camp set up at Nedupuzha Government Women’s Polytechnic College on Friday and assessed the situation.

“The government has already identified around 5,000 locations for potential relief camps in consultation with the Revenue and Local Self-Government departments to tackle emergency situations if they arise,” the Minister said during the visit.

Following heavy waterlogging in low-lying areas like Mullaykkal Thuruth and Mallithara in divisions 43 and 44 of Nedupuzha, affected families were shifted to the camp. Currently, 66 individuals from 18 families are being sheltered there.

Basic facilities

Mr. Rajan entrusted the village officer and the tahsildar with the responsibility of ensuring that all basic facilities are available at the camp. He also instructed officials to assist those in need of medical help and facilitate their access to the disaster relief fund.

He, along with Higher Education Minister R. Bindu and District Collector Arjun Pandian, also visited a flood relief camp functioning at H.D.P. Samajam School in Edathirinji to assess the relief efforts.

30 families

The camp, which began operations on June 16 following heavy rain, currently shelters around 30 families from wards 1, 3, 4, 12, and 14 of the Padiyoor grama panchayat.

Currently 28 relief camps are functioning in various parts of the district. In all, 1,506 people of 549 families have been shifted to these camps.
