Nita Ambani, the chairperson of Reliance Foundation, announced on Friday that the company is on track to develop a 130-acre Coastal Road Gardens in Mumbai, a major green space project envisioned as the city’s answer to iconic urban parks such as London’s Hyde Park or New York’s Central Park.
“Last year, I shared with you a dream taking shape along Mumbai’s coastline – the Coastal Road Gardens. We now have a world-class team of landscape architects, ecologists, planners, and engineers who are working on the master plan design, one that brings global expertise while remaining uniquely and authentically Mumbai in spirit," she said at the 49th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) on Friday.
She said initial work on the project has already commenced, with 15,000 trees already on site. The gardens are envisioned to have more than 60,000 trees upon completion, shaping a new green lung for Mumbai.
“In a city that never stops, the Gardens will serve as a pocket of stillness, peace, and serenity; as an invitation to heal and soak in fresh air," she said. “It will be a hub of flora and fauna with shaded walking and cycling paths, open maidans, public gyms, children’s play areas, and vibrant spaces for arts and culture."
Nita Ambani said the Coastal Road Gardens would serve as a tribute to the spirit of Mumbai and a place for everyone to reconnect with nature, calling it an investment in the city’s long-term health.
