611 booked for drunk driving in Hyderabad and Cyberabad

The Hyderabad Traffic Police booked 415 motorists during a two-day special drive against drunken driving conducted on Friday and Saturday, February 13 and February 14. The enforcement was aimed at improving road safety, according to a press note issued on February 15.

Of the 415 offenders, 341 were two wheeler riders, 27 were three wheeler drivers and 47 were driving four wheelers. Officials stated that there would be zero tolerance towards drunken driving and that such drives would continue.

Meanwhile, the Cyberabad Traffic Police conducted a weekend special drive and apprehended 196 offenders. Among them, 140 were two-wheeler riders, 13 were three-wheeler drivers, 41 were four-wheeler drivers, and two were driving heavy vehicles.

Police said that motorists found driving in an inebriated condition and causing fatal accidents would be booked under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, which deals with culpable homicide not amounting to murder and carries a maximum punishment of 10 years’ imprisonment along with a fine.

During the week between February 9 and February 14, a total of 212 drunk driving cases were disposed of in courts in Cyberabad. Of these, six persons were awarded a penalty along with social service, while 206 were fined.
