Can you imagine eating 66 hot dogs in just a few minutes? Well, this may sound bizarre, but recently Joey Chestnut and Miki Sudo proved once again why they are the undisputed kings of competitive eating! As the duo crushed the competition at the annual Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest held at Coney Island on the Fourth of July and won a whopping Rs 9.5 lakh reward.A historic 18th win for ChestnutJoey Chestnut scarfed down a whopping 66 hot dogs in just 10 minutes to claim the men's title. This marks his 18th victory at the event. The massive win earned him the famous Mustard Yellow Belt and a $10,000 cash prize (around ₹9.5 lakh). While Chestnut easily beat the second-place finisher, Patrick Bertoletti (who ate 51), he didn't quite match his own mind-boggling 2021 world record of 76 hot dogs.Overcoming the HeatChestnut admitted that the sweltering 90°F (32°C) weather slowed him down. He explained that he had to stay calm and pacing himself was crucial. Pushing too hard in that heat, he noted, could have caused food to get stuck in his throat. "Eating here on the Fourth of July is a dream; it's electric. There's no place better on Earth," Chestnut told reporters.Miki Sudo keeps her streak aliveOn the women's side, Miki Sudo swallowed 38.75 hot dogs to secure her 12th career victory.
Sudo, who holds the women’s world record of 51 hot dogs, credited her win to muscle memory and the high-energy energy of the crowd. After her win, Sudo joined the fans to cheer for her husband—a fellow competitive eater who once set a record by eating 50 boiled eggs in just over three minutes.A New York traditionThe Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest has been a staple of American Independence Day celebrations since 1972. Every year, thousands gather outside the original Nathan's restaurant in New York to watch the world's top eaters face off.
