70 officials rewarded for their meritorious service in Tiruvarur district

Hoisting the national flag, acknowledgement of meritorious services and distribution of welfare assistance marked the Independence Day celebrations held in Tiruvarur district on August 15.

While Collector V. Mohanachandran unfurled the tri-colour at a function held at the District Sports Stadium complex near the District Collectorate, respective heads of the civic bodies and educational institutions functioning in Tiruvarur district did the honours at their respective institutions.

After hoisting the tri-colour, the Collector honoured the freedom fighters and their legal heirs and presented certificates and medals to 70 government officials for their meritorious service and distributed welfare assistance worth ₹7.11 lakh to 39 beneficiaries under various schemes, according to an official release.

CUTN’s distinction

At the Central University of Tamil Nadu at Neelakudi near Tiruvarur, Vice-Chancellor M. Krishnan hoisted the tri-colour and addressed the staff and students of the institution. In his address, Professor Krishnan said the Central University had been adjudged first among all the Central Universities and third place among all centrally funded institutions in the report published by the Union Ministry of Education on the success stories of higher educational institutions.

Giving a brief outline of the social responsibility activities of the institution, the Vice-Chancellor said that the ‘Diploma in Silambam’ course introduced this year at the CUTN Community College had received an overwhelming response with more than 1,000 applications received for 100 seats.

The conduct of the CUET for admissions in Tamil language had opened the doors of higher education to many more students from Tamil Nadu as the percentage of students enrolled in CUTN, which hovered around 10 in the past, had now risen to 40, he added.
