The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a nationwide ground stop for United Airlines flights due to a major technical outage, according to Reuters. The issue, which affected United’s entire system, has caused widespread disruptions across several major airports in the country.

While the specific cause of the outage remains unclear, United Airlines confirmed that its technical teams are actively working to resolve the problem and restore operations as soon as possible.

Flights scheduled to depart for key destinations, including Chicago, Denver, Newark, Houston, and San Francisco, have been significantly delayed. Although United has not yet issued a detailed statement on the root cause, it has been responding to individual customer complaints on social media.

One message shared by the airline on social platform X (formerly Twitter) read, “We’re aware of the system error at this time and are working on a fix to have you on your way as soon as possible. We understand that this disruption has caused frustrations during your travel and appreciate your continued patience."

According to DownDetector, an outage-monitoring site, reports of technical issues began surfacing around 8 pm EDT on Wednesday. Meanwhile, data from FlightAware showed that at least 20 United flights were canceled and more than 400 were delayed as of Wednesday evening.

In a statement shared by Local Memphis, the airline said, “Due to a technology issue, we are holding United mainline flights at their departure airports. We expect additional flight delays this evening as we work through this issue. Safety is our top priority, and we’ll work with our customers to get them to their destinations."

Frustrated passengers took to social media, sharing images and videos of long waits at gates and on grounded planes. One traveler wrote, “System-wide outage, all United Airlines planes grounded. Sitting on the plane…they have given us the option to get off with no ETA." Another commented that United Airlines “needs a complete reset."

As of now, United has not provided a timeline for resolving the outage or detailed which future flights may be affected. The cause of the technical error remains undisclosed, though a formal update from the airline is expected soon.
