At least four people, including a 72-year-old woman, were shot dead on Monday afternoon after unidentified gunmen opened fire on a vehicle near Manipur’s Churachandpur district, police said.

Sources indicated that the killings are not related to ethnic tensions in the Myanmar-bordering state but are suspected to stem from an intergroup clash among Kuki insurgents.

The ambush occurred around 2 PM near Mongjang village in Churachandpur, with reports indicating that the victims were travelling in an SUV when they were attacked.

The victims of the targeted attack have been identified as Thenkhothang Haokip alias Thahpi (48), Seikhogin (34), Lengouhao (35) and Phalhing (72).

Preliminary reports suggested that they were shot from a point-blank range, another official in the Churachandpur district headquarters said.

Following the incident, police and additional security forces were deployed to the area to secure the site and begin search operations.

The police have cordoned off the area and have yet to release an official statement detailing the sequence of events.
