In a display of solidarity that underscores the tightening bonds within the INDIA bloc, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav arrived in Kolkata on Thursday to meet with Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee. The meeting, which commenced at 3.15 pm, took place against the backdrop of a historic and contentious electoral shift in West Bengal, where the BJP has emerged as the majority party for the first time, ending the Trinamool Congress’s 15-year tenure.

The interaction was marked by a visible sense of camaraderie and shared defiance against the mandate. Upon arriving, Akhilesh Yadav greeted Abhishek Banerjee with a warm hug, a gesture widely seen as a public endorsement of the TMC’s second-in-command. Addressing Abhishek, the SP chief was overheard praising the party’s resilience, stating, “What a fight you all have given. Commendable fight."

The most poignant moment of the meeting occurred when Yadav addressed the “outgoing chief minister". Despite the BJP’s tally of 207 seats and Mamata Banerjee’s own setback in Bhabanipur, she has so far refused to step down. Akhilesh sought to bolster her morale, insisting that the electoral outcome was not a personal or moral defeat. “You have not lost Didi. Aap haari nahi hain, Didi," he remarked, echoing Banerjee’s own refusal to accept the verdict as a reflection of the public will.

This high-profile visit comes as Mamata Banerjee signals a multi-pronged legal and political response to the results, alleging massive irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process and the conduct of the Election Commission. For the seemingly fragmented INDIA bloc, this meeting serves as a strategic pivot towards 2029, framing the Bengal loss not as an end but as a rallying point for a united “moral victory" against the saffron wave.
