In what might save the Kavya Maran-owned Sunrisers Leeds some flak, star Pakistan spinner Abrar Ahmed may not turn up for his stint with the franchise in the Hundred, which will clash with Pakistan’s Test series against the West Indies.
As per a report by Telecom Asia Sport, Abrar is caught in a nation-versus-club dilemma and must choose between joining the national team for red-ball cricket or representing his team in white-ball action.
Although the Pakistan Cricket Board has granted Abrar the No-Objection Certificate to feature in foreign leagues, choosing to play the Hundred would mean skipping the West Indies Tests, which might not go down well with the board.
“Abrar and his agent are in a fix because if he is selected for the Test team to play in the West Indies, it will affect his participation in The Hundred, which will start four days before the first Test," a source said while speaking to The Telecom Asia Sport.
The Hundred gets underway on July 21, while the opening Test against the West Indies is scheduled to start on Saturday, July 25. Sunrisers Leeds will play the opening game against MI London.
Abrar’s £190,000 (approximately Rs 2.3 crore) deal with Indian-owned Sunrisers Leeds sparked widespread debate across Indian cricket circles.
The signing triggered criticism on social media, with Maran facing backlash from some fans after reports claimed she had bid for Abrar at the auction.
According to the report, missing the Hundred would be a major setback for Abrar.
“The Sunrisers Leeds owners have already faced criticism from 1.4 billion people and stood by their decision. It is important that Abrar plays in The Hundred," the source told Telecom Asia Sport.
As per the report, Pakistan’s selectors are all set to announce the Test team on Monday and are considering Abrar as the specialist spinner for the tour of the Caribbean, believing his wrist spin could prove a key weapon against the West Indies batting line-up.
