A 22-year-old MBA student accused of murdering his batchmate and girlfriend in Indore allegedly attempted to perform black magic rituals to “summon her spirit" after the crime, police said on Monday.
The accused, identified as Piyush Dhamnotiya, was arrested in Mumbai after days on the run. Currently being questioned by the Indore police on remand, the arrested youth, who is the son of a businessman in Mandsaur, has confessed to strangling the woman to death on February 10, as per news reports.
Investigators said that details emerging during interrogation have shocked officers probing the case.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Indore) Krishan Lalchandani, the accused fled to Mumbai hours after the murder. While staying in Panvel, he allegedly lit incense sticks in an isolated area and watched online videos on summoning spirits, claiming he wanted to speak to the “aatma" of his girlfriend, NDTV reported.
CCTV cameras installed near the rented accommodation in the Uncle Gali locality captured Dhamnotiya arriving with the woman on February 10. Around two-and-a-half hours later, he was seen leaving alone, carrying a bag.
The woman, a resident of Indore’s Pandarinath area, had left home that day telling her family she was going to attend a birthday party. When she failed to return, her family grew concerned. Three days later, neighbours alerted police about a foul smell from the accused’s room, where her body was found.
During interrogation, police said the accused admitted to being in a relationship with the woman for about a year. He allegedly wanted to marry her, but disputes over marriage and alleged chats with other men led to frequent arguments.
According to the investigators, an argument broke out between the two on the day of the incident. The accused allegedly strangled her and later tied her hands and feet with ropes found in the apartment. Investigators are examining whether sexual assault occurred before or after her death.
Officials also said that after the killing, the accused consumed alcohol and remained in the room for several hours. Forensic teams are examining ropes recovered from the apartment, CCTV footage, digital evidence, and a broken knife allegedly used in the crime.
Investigators found that objectionable videos of the two were allegedly shared in a college group and uploaded to the woman’s WhatsApp status. A message was also reportedly sent from her phone late that night stating she would not be returning home. Her phone was later switched off.
Police said the accused destroyed the woman’s mobile phone while in Mumbai in an attempt to destroy evidence.
“He became mentally disturbed after the incident and tried tantric rituals to summon the spirit of the woman," DCP Lalchandani said.
Police are continuing interrogation to establish the full sequence of events. Further forensic examination of digital and physical evidence is underway.
