AIMIM President Asaduddin Owaisi on Sunday announced that his party will contest the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections in alliance with Humayun Kabir’s Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP).

AJUP founder and former Trinamool Congress leader Humayun Kabir had earlier said his party would contest 182 seats.

On Thursday, Kabir revealed that he had already announced 15 candidates and added three more: he himself will contest from Raninagar, another candidate named Humayun Kabir will contest from Bhagwangola, and Manisha Pathak Pandey will run from the Murshidabad 64 seat. This brought AJUP’s current announced list to 18 candidates.

Kabir confirmed that AIMIM would be a partner in the alliance, contesting roughly eight seats. He also mentioned that discussions with Owaisi had taken place, led by AIMIM West Bengal observer Advocate Adil Hussain, with further talks scheduled to finalise seat-sharing arrangements.

“I had already announced 15 candidates earlier. Now, Humayun Kabir will contest from Raninagar; he is also doing an additional job. Then, another businessman named Humayun Kabir will contest from Bhagwangola. Also, Manisha Pathak Pandey will contest from the 64-Murshidabad seat. So, with the 15 announced earlier and these three now, we have opened a list of 18 candidates today," he had said.

“My party, along with the alliance we are in, will contest in 182 seats. All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) will be a partner and will contest in approximately 8 of those seats," he added.

Kabir also confirmed he would personally contest from both the Rejinagar and Naoda constituencies in Murshidabad. He issued a direct challenge to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee regarding her seat in Bhawanipur.

The West Bengal Assembly has 294 seats. Polling is scheduled for April 23 and 29, while counting of votes will take place on May 4.
