Air India will temporarily cut a significant portion of its domestic and international operations as it battles rising operational costs driven by high fuel prices, according to sources familiar with the development.
The loss-making carrier, which has been facing financial headwinds, is set to reduce up to 22 per cent of its domestic flights and around 27 per cent of its international services over the coming months.
Air India currently operates about 4,400 flights each week, including approximately 3,600 domestic and 800 international services. The planned cuts will affect a substantial share of these operations.
“In continuation of our previously announced adjustments to select international services between June and August 2026, we have temporarily rationalised operations on certain domestic routes during the same period, with a reduction in frequencies on select routes," the airline said in a statement on Wednesday.
Sources indicated that 20-22 per cent of domestic flights will be reduced as part of this rationalisation exercise.
The airline said the move is driven by the sustained impact of high fuel prices on overall operations, which has made several routes less viable in the short term.
“Air India will continue to monitor demand and operating conditions closely, with a view to restoring frequencies as conditions stabilise," the statement added.
The carrier also assured that passengers affected by the changes will be proactively assisted, including re-accommodation on alternative flights, complimentary date changes, or full refunds, as applicable.
