Akshay Kumar on 'Golmaal 5'; ‘Ajay Devgn is the hero’; Confirms he’s not the lead

Expectations are high as Rohit Shetty is bringing together the 'Golmaal' gang once again on the big screens and now Akshay Kumar has addressed the buzz around his involvement in the project, making it clear that he is not playing the lead role in the much-awaited comedy film.Speaking about his role, Akshay told News 18, “I’m happy that they think I was good enough to be a part of 'Golmaal'. Ajay is the main hero. I’m not playing the main part. But what’s wrong with it? I look at a film as a film and never think ki main kya kar raha hoon uss film mein. For me, it’s far more important what the film is setting out to achieve. If I like the story, I’ll do it.”

Reunion with Rohit Shetty’s universe

Directed by Rohit Shetty, 'Golmaal 5' marks another collaboration between Akshay and Ajay after Singham Again, where Akshay made a cameo as Sooryavanshi.

The film brings together two of Bollywood’s biggest stars in a full-fledged comic setup this time. Reacting to Ajay’s remark about not leaving any franchise, Akshay said, “But isn’t it a great thing? It’s nice that whenever there’s any franchise, they want me.” His statement reflects his openness to being part of established cinematic universes without being driven by the need to lead every project.

No insecurity about sharing the spotlight

Akshay Kumar also dismissed any notion of insecurity about working in a film led by his contemporary.

The actor emphasised that his focus remains on the quality of the role rather than its prominence. He stated, “Mera role badhiya hai Golmaal mein but Ajay is the hero. I’ve no insecurity. Uski koi zaroorat nahi hai,” which translates to, “My role in Golmaal is good, but Ajay is the hero. I don’t have any insecurity. There’s no need for it.”

A strong ensemble returns

'Golmaal 5' features a familiar and beloved ensemble cast. Alongside Ajay Devgn, actors like Arshad Warsi, Tusshar Kapoor, Kunal Kemmu, and Shreyas Talpade return to reprise their roles.

Akshay Kumar on scripts and career choices

As Akshay Kumar completes 35 years in the film industry in 2026, the actor says he is enjoying the variety of scripts coming his way. He believes the industry is going through a phase of change, offering actors more opportunities to experiment. “I see fresh scripts and ideas coming to me all the time. Main yeh dekhna chahta hoon ki main kya alag kar sakta hoon, kaise kar sakta hoon. You’ve to choose among the five-six roles that come to you.

The rest go to other actors,” he shared. The 'Golmaal' franchise, which began with 'Golmaal: Fun Unlimited' in 2006, has grown into one of India’s most loved comedy series.
