United States President Donald Trump on Friday launched a blistering attack on the growing influence of democratic socialists within the Democratic Party, branding them “hardcore, godless communists" and warning that communism poses the “most serious threat" the United States has faced in its 250-year history.

Speaking at the Faith and Freedom Coalition Policy Conference in Washington on Friday, Trump also declared that America had been officially rededicated as “One Nation Under GOD."

“We officially rededicated America as One Nation Under GOD. We always have been, and we always will be!" Trump told the gathering.

The remarks came days after a string of progressive candidates backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani performed strongly in Democratic primaries.

While none of the victorious candidates has identified themselves as communists, two newly elected House candidates, Claire Valdez and Darializa Avila Chevalier, describe themselves as democratic socialists. Another Mamdani-backed candidate, Brad Lander, won his race after leaving the Democratic Socialists of America in 2023.

Without naming individual candidates, Trump accused Democrats of failing to confront what he described as an extremist ideological shift within the party.

“They don’t have the courage to fight them. So they’re turning communist themselves, becoming a Communist party. If they fought them the way they fight Republicans or the way they fight me, they’d be victorious," Trump said.

“Never forget, if the radical left ever gets the chance again, they will bring all this insanity back at levels you’ve never seen. They’re trying like hell," he said.

Calling communism an ideology built on false promises, Trump joked that he would be “the greatest communist in history" because he would simply promise free housing, food and rent to everyone.

“I think I’d be the greatest communist in history. I’d give free rent… Everybody gets free food! Everything is FREE!… From this point forward, everyone is going to vote for me," he said, before arguing that such systems inevitably collapse.

“The problem is, after two or three years, the country is a disaster area. That first year, you’re the most popular… But you’ll start living in squalor," Trump said.

He repeatedly linked communism with atheism, telling supporters, “These are hardcore, godless communists. All communists are godless."

Trump also claimed communists target religious institutions, particularly Christianity, and said the country should instead be celebrating “Christ and freedom and victories."

“This is the biggest threat to our country since its existence 250 years ago. We should be celebrating Christ and freedom and victories, and instead, we’re speaking about communism. These guys will attack all religions, but in particular Christianity. It’s part of their deal," the US president.

The comments followed this week’s New York congressional primaries, where several progressive candidates backed by Mamdani secured victories.

Their platforms include proposals such as rent control, stronger labour protections and expanded protections for immigrants. They have also called for the United States to distance itself from Israel.

None of the winners has described themselves as communists, and there are currently no self-identified communists serving in the US Congress.
