Following the tragic nightclub fire in Arpora, Goa, which claimed 25 lives, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has taken strict action against illegally constructed coastal clubs.
The government has demolished the unauthorised portion of the Romeo Lane Club at Vagator Beach, one of the properties owned by Gaurav and Sourav Luthra.
“Wherever we found blatant violations, we have closed them. They have to follow all norms to resume," CM Sawant said.
The club had been operating on government land for years despite a High Court order for demolition, raising questions about previous oversight.
Arrests and investigation
Authorities have already made some arrests and confirmed that more arrests are expected soon.
CM Sawant addressed the Luthra brothers’ status, saying, “We are in constant coordination with the central agencies. I can tell you that very soon both the accused will be in our custody."
The Luthra brothers are also under international scrutiny, with Interpol issuing a blue collar notice against them and their passports being targeted for cancellation.
Strict measures across Goa
CM Sawant has made it clear that all illegally constructed clubs along the coast will face similar action. “We are taking this seriously. Safety norms must be followed, and there will be no compromise," he said. The government is conducting thorough inspections to ensure compliance and prevent future tragedies.
The deadly fire at Romeo Lane, which occurred during peak tourist season, has sparked widespread outrage, highlighting lax enforcement of safety regulations in the state’s nightlife sector. Authorities are working to determine how the illegal club continued operations despite prior court orders and regulatory checks.
