US President Donald Trump described a viral moment from the G7 summit in France, where he walked into a room of world leaders and declared, “I’m the boss," saying the remark was made in jest and was not meant seriously.

“All of them [believed it]. But I was just being funny," Trump said, referring to the reaction from other leaders present in the room.

The moment occurred during the 52nd G7 Summit held in Évian-les-Bains, where Trump played a central role in several key diplomatic developments, including discussions on Iran, Ukraine and global trade tensions.

Trump said the comment came as he entered a long conference table setup during a summit session on global economic security, which he suggested gave the scene a theatrical feel.

“It was just sort of funny because there’s a very long table… and I just looked at ‘em. I said, I’m the boss," he recalled. He added that the phrase was quickly picked up beyond the room and circulated widely but insisted it should not be read as a serious assertion of authority over other leaders.

“I was just being funny. I wasn’t trying to be the boss," he said.

The G7 summit itself was marked by high-stakes diplomatic activity, with Trump heavily involved in negotiations around a tentative US–Iran memorandum of understanding aimed at easing tensions and reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Leaders at the summit broadly backed the proposal as part of efforts to stabilise global oil markets.

Trump also held a high-profile bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which both sides described as a step toward easing recent trade friction and addressing concerns over regional security incidents in the Gulf of Oman.

In a separate shift in tone, Trump signalled stronger alignment with European leaders on Ukraine policy after discussions with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, backing increased air defence support and sanctions targeting Russia’s energy exports.
