Assam’s political temperature rose sharply on Monday after Guwahati Police arrested one individual in connection with an alleged plan to stage an attack or create chaos involving Congress MP and Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Gaurav Gogoi. The arrest followed a police complaint and was carried out during an early-morning operation in Guwahati, according to officials familiar with the matter.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma claimed the alleged plot was aimed at manufacturing public sympathy for Gogoi amid an ongoing political controversy. Sarma further alleged that the plan was orchestrated by a group called Inclusive Minds, which he described as a think tank engaged by the Assam Congress to handle its public relations and communications. This claim, however, remains a government assertion and has not yet been independently corroborated by mainstream media or investigative findings.

Police officials have said that investigations are ongoing and that more details are likely to emerge within the next four to five days as inquiries progress. In light of the purported threat, the Assam government has provided Gogoi with three security personnel as a precautionary measure.

The alleged staged-attack plot comes at a time of heightened political confrontation between the BJP-led state government and the Congress. Sarma has repeatedly accused Gogoi of having “Pakistan links," pointing to Gogoi’s 2013 visit to Pakistan with his wife and alleging her professional or financial connections abroad. Gogoi has firmly rejected these allegations, calling them baseless, politically motivated, and part of a sustained campaign to malign him.

The controversy has been further fuelled by references to a Special Investigation Team (SIT) report cited by the Chief Minister. Congress leaders have criticised the report, claiming it lacks substantive evidence and alleging it was held back for months before being selectively invoked. Several opposition leaders and Congress units have dismissed the allegations outright, terming them unfounded and driven by political vendetta.

Legal hostilities have also intensified, with Sarma filing a ₹500 crore defamation suit against Gogoi and other Congress leaders over counter-allegations made against him. Despite the sharp rhetoric and escalating accusations, no arrests have been made against Gogoi in relation to the Pakistan-link claims. Authorities have indicated that no such action is planned ahead of the upcoming assembly elections, citing concerns over perceptions of political misuse of power.

For now, the alleged attack plot, a single arrest, and competing political narratives continue to dominate Assam’s political discourse.
