Tension gripped Indrapuri Colony in Ghaziabad on Sunday after a statue of Babasaheb Ambedkar was allegedly vandalised by unidentified miscreants, triggering widespread protests.

Hundreds of locals and Ambedkar supporters gathered at the site after the incident came to light, staging a sit-in and blocking the Delhi–Saharanpur Highway, which led to severe traffic disruption.

While police managed to reopen one lane after intervention, protesters continue to occupy the other lane, demanding immediate action against the culprits.

Police officials said that a local team was rushed to the spot in the morning after receiving information. On inspection, it was confirmed that a roadside statue had been vandalised.

“A team has been constituted to apprehend those involved, and a case has been registered,” an official said. He added that the SWAT team has also joined the probe and is examining CCTV footage and other evidence. Two suspects have been detained so far.

The incident drew strong reactions from local leaders. Loni MLA Nand Kishor Gurjar visited the site and demanded strict action under the provisions of the National Security Act. Loni Municipal Council Chairperson Ranjita Dhama also condemned the act, describing it as an attempt to disturb communal harmony in the area.

Amid escalating tensions, a heavy police force has been deployed in the area, with officials maintaining close vigil. Authorities are trying to persuade protesters to clear the blockade, but demonstrators have refused to disperse until the culprits are arrested. The situation remains tense as efforts continue to restore normalcy.
