Amber Glenn never expected a fun video with teammate Alysa Liu to turn into a huge online rumor. But after a clip from the Stars on Ice tour went viral on TikTok, fans quickly began guessing that the two Olympic skaters were dating.
The comments became so loud that Glenn finally stepped in and cleared everything up herself. The video showed Glenn, 26, and Liu, 20, skating together during the post-Olympic Stars on Ice performances. Both wore matching pink sparkling outfits while laughing, holding hands, and spinning on the ice. Fans flooded the comment section with romance rumors, and the clip eventually reached around 1.8 million likes.Glenn later responded directly in the comments to stop the speculation.“GUYS ALYSA IS LIKE A LITTLE SISTER TO ME! I’VE KNOWN HER SINCE SHE WAS 10 AND I WAS 16,” Glenn wrote. She also shared an older photo showing herself as a teenager beside a much younger Liu to prove how long they have known each other. The attention around the viral video came only months after the pair helped Team USA win gold in the team figure skating event at the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics earlier this year. Along with Isabeau Levito, the skaters became popular online and were nicknamed the “Blade Angels” after an NBC feature used a Taylor Swift voiceover for the trio.
Amber Glenn addresses Alysa Liu dating rumors after viral Stars on Ice TikTok comments
During the media session, she said it had been a “hard time” for many people in the LGBTQ+ community and explained that she wanted to use her platform to encourage others to stay strong. But the reaction online quickly turned negative after those comments. Days later, Glenn revealed on Instagram that she had received threats and hateful messages after speaking about politics and LGBTQ+ issues.“When I chose to utilize one of the amazing things about the United States of America (Freedom of speech) to convey how I feel as an athlete competing for Team USA in a troubling time for many Americans I am now receiving a scary amount of hate/threats for simply using my voice WHEN ASKED about how I feel,” Glenn wrote.“I did anticipate this but I am disappointed by it. I will be limiting my time on social media for my own wellbeing for now but I will never stop using my voice for what I believe in.”Her comments came after President Donald Trump signed an executive order earlier this year banning transgender women from competing in women’s sports.Despite the online noise, Glenn and Liu are continuing to skate together in the Stars on Ice tour, which features Olympic and world champion skaters performing in live shows around the world. The viral TikTok may have sparked wild rumors, but Glenn made it very clear that her bond with Liu is family-like, not romantic.
